The Cottage Cheese – Modern Indian Flavours with Local Character

Toronto’s food scene thrives on reinvention, and The Cottage Cheese captures that spirit with ease. Just two years after opening, this urban Indian restaurant has earned a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand recognition for delivering creative, ingredient-driven dishes that bridge tradition and modernity. Known for sourcing fresh produce from Kensington Market, it’s a place where familiar Indian comfort meets fresh local expression.

Here’s a look at my visit and the dishes and drinks we tried.

The meal began with the Pink Samosa Chaat, a crisp pastry filled with spiced potato, layered with sweetened yogurt, tamarind, and mint chutney. Each spoonful balanced cool, tangy, and savoury notes, a bright introduction to the kitchen’s playful approach.

The Lemongrass Chili Coconut Prawns followed, featuring black tiger shrimp and bell peppers tossed in a creamy coconut and lemongrass sauce. The citrus and chili lifted the dish, while the coconut base softened the spice and highlighted the shrimp’s sweetness.

The Gunpowder Prawns brought a bolder touch, coated in South Indian gunpowder masala and yogurt, then finished with dill sauce. The contrast of spice and herb made the flavours linger in a satisfying way.

The Mango Chicken Moilee showcased tender chicken in a silky coconut milk curry infused with mustard seeds and fresh mango. The natural sweetness of the fruit blended with the spice to create a comforting yet distinctive balance.

Both Garlic Naan and Plain Naan arrived warm, soft, and ideal for soaking up every bit of the sauce.

Dessert came as Gulab Jamun Churros, golden and syrupy, a creative take on the classic sweet that felt both nostalgic and new.

For drinks, the Mango Lassi was a creamy blend of mango juice and yogurt, cooling and bright at once.

Dining at The Cottage Cheese feels like a journey through Indian flavours reimagined through local ingredients. It’s a restaurant that doesn’t just serve food, it tells a story of how Toronto’s diversity continues to shape what Indian cuisine can be.
