The World’s oldest brewery, Weihenstephan, will transform the Toronto iconic sports bar The Dock Ellis, into The Matchless Six bar, a celebration hub and mini Hall of Fame museum for women in sports.
From July 25th to July 28th, Weihenstephan celebration hub will feature pop-in appearances by former Team Canada athletes all weekend. The Sports Hall of Fame will showcase all-female memorabilia and screen important female sports games from day to night, including Team Canada’s female games from Paris 2024.
While women competed for the first time at the 1900 Games in Paris, Amsterdam 1928 marked the first-time Canadian women entered the Olympics. Six Canadian women, “The Matchless Six”, Fanny Rosenfeld, Jean Thompson, Myrtle Cook, Florence Jane Bell, Ethel Smith, and Ethel Catherwood, participated in four of the five competing events that allowed women to partake – 4×100 relay, 100m, 800m, and high jump. The pinnacle event was the 4 x 100-metre relay. The team of Rosenfeld, Bell, Cook and Smith won gold with a record time of 48.4 seconds. The Canadian women scored highest overall at the Games with their medals and point count.
Aligned to kick off with the Paris 2024 Games, 96 years after the first Olympics, Canadian women entered; the majority of Team Canada are women. The Matchless Six bar signifies Weihenstephan’s dedication to celebrating the resilience of women in transcending gender-based challenges and honouring the legacy of these amazing athletes.
“Weihenstephan is the world’s oldest brewery, with over 1,000 years of producing its signature beers. The brewery understands women athletes’ perseverance, and we wanted to celebrate this fact by creating a sports hall of fame bar dedicated to women,” says Sean Fleming, CEO of Brunswick Bierworks Inc. and the importer of Weihenstephan in Canada. “We look forward to welcoming all athletes down to The Matchless Six bar to celebrate Team Canada’s W, with a W!”
Throughout the three-day celebration, attendees can expect a unique blend of Weihenstephan signature brews alongside special activations honouring female athletes and their achievements. The bar will feature appearances by esteemed members of Team Canada, offering fans and enthusiasts an opportunity to connect with some of the nation’s most accomplished athletes firsthand. Guests can look forward to engaging with sports legends and viewing live coverage of the 2024 Summer Olympics and other screenings of some of the most notable moments in women’s sports.
